The NBA Offseason that Changed Everything

This year's NBA offseason can simply be described with one word — unforgettable. All basketball fans assumed that teams across both the Eastern and Western Conferences were going to try to build new and improved lineups in order to take down the rising New York Knicks, but no one knew that the general managers would go to these lengths. If someone had told me three months ago that the Philadelphia 76ers would have arguably the best team on paper of all time, I would have simply laughed in their face. Some of these trades and pickups cannot go unnoticed. Let's dive in.

The Portland Trail Blazers-Memphis Grizzlies Trade

This trade is unique. Neither team "scammed" the other, but it seems to be almost the opposite. You may be wondering, what does that even mean? Well, this exchange was a lose-lose. The Memphis Grizzlies were rightfully eager to send Ja Morant away because he had not played fifty games in two years. In my opinion, they settled. The Grizzlies did not need two more forwards; their roster has a clear empty spot for a competent guard that can score at will. Until Memphis finds that piece of their puzzle, they will continue to fall short of the play-in tournament. The Portland Trail Blazers received Morant in exchange for Jerami Grant and Kris Murray. Jerami Grant has just come off a monster season, averaging 19 points and 3.5 rebounds. He would have fit perfectly with Damian Lillard coming back and Deni Avdija's continued domination. Unfortunately, by their own doing, Portland is now stuck in a sticky situation. Both Ja Morant and Lillard play point guard, so which one is going to be forced to step down? That is up for Micah Nori to decide, but I do not think it will end well.

The Philadelphia 76ers-Boston Celtics Trade

This trade actually makes me question how some people get into the NBA general manager business. The Boston Celtics gave up a recent MVP contender who carried an injured team by averaging 29 points and 7 rebounds in exchange for a washed-up 36-year-old (Paul George) who has a maximum of four years left in the league. After Jaylen Brown brought Boston 56 wins with little help, they sent him off to Philadelphia — ridiculous. Even though the Celtics made this terrible decision, their roster is surprisingly pretty impressive. They picked up one of the best rebounding big men in the league, Mitchell Robinson, which gives this team the extra depth no one knew they needed. The 76ers are nothing short of title contenders. They grabbed the greatest player of all time out of free agency, LeBron James, in order to finalize their super team. The 76ers now have two of the best forwards in the NBA to help out their promising guards: Tyrese Maxey and VJ Edgecombe. If Joel Embiid can stay healthy, this team may just be unstoppable.

Milwaukee Bucks-Miami Heat Trade

The Miami Heat have truly gone all out this season. After Jimmy Butler left Miami on February 5, 2025, the team struggled. It was clear that the Heat no longer had a player that the whole team could turn to in crucial moments, but this trade may just change everything for them. The Heat received Giannis Antetokounmpo and Bobby Portis for Tyler Herro, Kasparas Jakučionis, Jaime Jaquez Jr., Kel'el Ware, two first-round picks, one first-round pick swap, and one second-round pick. Giannis will most definitely be able to consistently score the ball, dominate the boards, and be a defensive menace. The Milwaukee Bucks have struggled to make a deep playoff run in recent years, which explains why they want to rebuild. I believe this can be a great fresh start for the Bucks. On paper, this trade looks like everyone won, but everything will be confirmed after the first half of the 2026-27 season.

Charlotte Hornets-Minnesota Timberwolves Trade

The Charlotte Hornets-Minnesota Timberwolves trade not only shocked the world, but it also crafted potentially the most entertaining team fans have seen in years. The T-Wolves received LaMelo Ball and shipped away Naz Reid. Although Reid was a fan favorite in Minnesota, a trade like this had to be done. As the years have passed, it has become more and more clear that Minnesota cannot make it past the conference finals without a more impactful point guard. Who is a point guard that influences his teammates on and off the court? LaMelo Ball. The LaMelo Ball and Anthony Edwards duo looks very scary going into next season. The Hornets are continuing to build around their young stars, Brandon Miller and Kon Knueppel. This trade may not be the difference-maker for Charlotte this season, but their young roster certainly has the potential to be dominant in years to come.

Toronto Raptors-Los Angeles Clippers Trade

Although this trade took some time to finalize, it eventually went through, leaving the Clippers in shambles. The Los Angeles Clippers received three-point shooter Gradey Dick and mid-range specialist Brandon Ingram. In exchange, the Clippers sent Toronto's savior, Kawhi Leonard, back to his home. Some of you may be curious about why this trade took some time to officially wrap up. I will explain. The Clippers had been under investigation over the past eleven months for illegally giving money to Kawhi Leonard that did not count towards the salary cap. The NBA fined Kawhi Leonard $700,000, which may seem harsh, but it is not nearly as awful as the Clippers' punishment. The Los Angeles Clippers' owner was fined $30 million and has been suspended for a year. In addition to that cruel penalty, the Clippers have also lost five first-round draft picks. Although the actual trade may help the Clippers, their organization is going to have a bumpy few seasons. The Raptors, on the other hand, are looking scary. Kawhi Leonard, RJ Barrett, and Scottie Barnes are going to be a powerhouse trio. Maybe Kawhi can save Toronto, similarly to how he did in 2019.

In this unforgettable offseason, it seems clear that some organizations won their trades and others lost, but we all may be in for some surprises. All of these interesting changes around the league will definitely shake up the NBA, but will any of them be enough to stop the current NBA champions? As a Knicks fan, I hope not — but as an NBA enthusiast, I am incredibly excited to find out.
